At the Cottage Kindergarten, we are friendly and we’re fun. We aim to build successful, competent learners, with respect for all.  The environment is whānau friendly where we encourage whānau to be part of our planning and curriculum. Kaiako actively encourage the concepts of whanaungatanga (family relationships) and tuakana-teina (peer support) relationships throughout our environment.

Our curriculum is challenging, flexible and fun. Tamariki can choose where they play, inside or in the sun. Tamariki learn through their play and meaningful experiences with support and guidance, alongside their Kaiako. We encourage tamariki to reflect and be creative thinkers, to develop understanding and find their own answers.

We have an amazing outdoor environment where we encourage tamariki to take risks and have a go, encouraging curiosity and building confidence. Our indoor environment is open-plan with spaces for tamariki to make it their own.

We welcome and encourage all our whanau to share their skills and knowledge with our kindergarten community. We love to celebrate our whanau cultural celebrations, for example, Chinese New Year, Matariki, and Diwali, with whanau nights and celebration days. We view tamariki as competent learners valuing their contribution, encouraging sharing, turn-taking, broadening knowledge and asking questions. Social competence is fostered with the cultivation of reciprocal respect.

We value the contribution of our whānau towards making kindergarten an amazing learning environment. Our whānau group meets once a term to support fundraising and whānau events throughout the year. We participate in Polyfest each year to showcase our cultural diversity. We take our 10 oldest tamariki to Taiao Tuhura (nature discovery) every fortnight and go on a community walk with 10 tamariki alternate weeks visiting places like Rose Lodge, other play spaces and community groups.

We have an open-door policy and encourage whānau to stay and play alongside their tamariki. The jug is always on and we also welcome whānau to sit and chat about their tamariki learning here at The Cottage.

Head Teacher

Aletta Reid

Kia ora, My name is Aletta and I am the Head Kaiako here at The Cottage Kindergarten.

I graduated from Otago University in 2011 and worked in the ECE sector for 9 years before moving to join the amazing team as the Head Kaiako here at The Cottage.

As a team, we work closely to provide an environment where not only the tamariki learn but Kaiako are valued and respected and supported to grow as a Kaiako.

I enjoy being part of the wider community through taking time to volunteer for big events such as Polyfest and south sea spray. This also reflects my passion for teaching and building relationships with tamariki and whānau building a strong sense of whanaungatanga and learning about their culture, passions and hopes and dreams for their tamariki.
