Otatara Kinikatene is at the heart of our local community and relationships are at the heart of our kaupapa. Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Kindness and Kaitiakitanga are the pou from which our learning and teaching are woven.

When you enter our kindergarten, you will see kaiako, tamariki and whānau work collaboratively to encourage bravery and resilience, celebrating creativity and positivity in authentic ways. Whanaungatanga is driving our curriculum design, kaiako and whānau come together for positive outcomes for their tamariki.

Our eldest 10 tamariki are enriched in our outdoor nature programme, which runs fortnightly on Wednesday mornings. We get out into our backyard, the Otatara Scenic Reserve

We are lucky we have the local school right next door and our transition to school is so smooth and effortless as we do jump jam with the school, kapahaka with the new entrant class and many different other activities with the school as they arise.

You will feel calm and present in the mindful atmosphere we have created to support unhurried learning and exploration where children can connect with their mind, body, and emotions, to test their working theories and connect with their bodies as they are supported to make sense of the world around them. Tamariki are empowered and supported to engage, take risks, celebrate success, reflect on learning, and take care of their place and the people and things within it with respect and kindness.

You will hear te reo māori spoken with respectful conversations and strong te ao Māori links delivered to all areas of our curriculum in authentic ways. You will notice our strong connection to kaitiakitanga and environmentally friendly and sustainable practices which help educate and grow the ecological identity of our tamariki and connect them to their whenua. Diversity is welcomed and celebrated.

Nau mai haere mai, we warmly welcome you to come and experience our place. To see, hear and feel the teaching and learning in action and discover if this is your place too.

Lynn Millar

Kia ora Koutou,

My name is Lynn Millar, and for the past 12 years I have been teaching at Waverley Kindergarten. I am excited to be taking on the Head Teacher role at Otatara Kindergarten for a 6-month fixed term.
I am married with two grown sons, a daughter-in-law and a dog.

Acknowledging each unique tamaiti as a confident and capable learner is at the heart of my teaching. Nurturing the tamariki to grow as individuals through investigating and making discoveries together is something that I value. Being artistically creative is another passion of mine that I enjoy fostering within the tamariki. Kindness and empathy for all living beings and our environment are foundational values that guide all aspects of my teaching interactions.

I am enjoying being part of a great community and working with and alongside amazing tamariki and whānau and a fabulous teaching team. If Otatara Kindergarten feels like the right fit for your tamaiti, you are most welcome to come in for a visit and a korero with us here at Otatara Kindergarten. We look forward to meeting you and your whānau soon.
