Glengarry Kindergarten is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac, one block from the Glengarry shopping hub.

We are a full-year kindergarten with morning sessions (8.30am -12.30pm) and then full-day (8.30am -2.30pm). We are accommodating and flexible to make sure these hours work for your tamariki and whānau. We have a strong three-teacher team with many years of experience in early childhood education.

We pride ourselves on being part of the Enviroschools programme and have a large garden where the tamariki assist in growing produce for our whānau. Tamariki are encouraged to explore ideas, maintain the environment, and extend the connection between themselves and their environment. Tamariki learn respect, contribution, and empowerment and are assured that their voices are heard as they take pride in learning to care for themselves and their kindergarten.

Every second Wednesday our senior tamariki venture out to Myross Bush for our Nature Discovery Programme – Taiao tūhura. The tamariki love being in the bush, and this offers them a chance to experience nature in an environment outside of the kindergarten, learning about papatūānuku and the value of being outdoors. This gives our tamariki time to interact with other kindergartens that attend the same day, learning how to work alongside others.

Our kindergarten has a large outdoor area with a covered sandpit, so tamariki have plenty of space to learn and discover all year round. Tamariki are able to challenge their physical abilities and are offered chances to participate in daily rituals and routines. Tamariki lead their own learning and we design our experiences to reflect this. Excursions are a highlight of our curriculum and are planned around focus areas and community events such as Polyfest and Matariki. We have a strong connection to local schools making the transition to kura easy.

Through shared understanding, empowerment, and respectful relationships between tamariki, whānau, and kaiako, we all become integral parts of the Glengarry community.

Head Teacher

Carmel McDowall

For as long as I can remember, I had a strong connection to children and for many years planned to be an ECE teacher. I chose to wait until my children had left home to start my ECE journey, studying and gaining my degree.

I am Invercargill born and breed, growing up in Ōtātara – so a true Southlander. I am married and husband Neil and I have three grown tamariki and six mokopuna. We have lived away for 22 years in Te Anau and Cromwell and returned home to Invercargill in early 2023. I love reading, gardening, walking and have a strong sense of whānau and friend connection.

This is my first kindergarten role, and I am enjoying the experience of belonging to a great community and working with and alongside amazing tamariki, whānau and colleagues.
