Elsie Street Kindergarten is situated in the centre of Gore. Our kindergarten has been proudly operating in the community for over 75 years. We are an Enviro School with silver accreditation, which is woven through our everyday curriculum. Our daily 6-hour session is a popular option for parents and whānau as they closely reflect the school day model.

At Elsie Street Kindergarten whanaungatanga is the foundation of learning. We believe tamariki have the right to an understanding of Kaitiakitanga, of nature and their place in nature’s community. We value tamariki learning through play. We are proud of our learning environment where we have a range of revolving resources available for tamariki to explore, create working theories, engage in pretend play, take safe risks, and make new discoveries.

Through the early childhood curriculum of Te Whariki our programme provides learning opportunities that enhance confidence and competence of tamariki. Kaiako provide fun and challenging opportunities that encourage participation, and equitable opportunities for learning. Tamariki actively learn to be kaitiaki of their learning environment. Their learning is celebrated and proudly displayed around the kindergarten. We value learning links between home and kindergarten and regularly invite whānau to share photos and stories to enhance the relationship between these learning spaces.

Kaiako actively support tamariki with their social and emotional development. This occurs with various teaching strategies, including the bucket filling theory, providing rich speech and language strategies for tamariki, and reinforcing by celebrating each other as unique individuals.

Elsie Street Kindergarten acknowledges the dual heritage of Aotearoa and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as pou that support partnerships with the rich and varied cultures and whānau that make up our learning community.

We have an open door and invite you to visit our kindergarten, meet our kaiako, and observe our fun learning programme in action. If you are unable to make an initial visit, please phone or send us an email on the above contacts.

Head Teacher

Cara Sharp

Kia ora! I have been kaiako matua (Head Teacher) of Elsie Street since 2018. I am honoured to have been teaching with Kindergarten South since 2010, and teaching in early childhood education for over 20 years. It is a privilege to have established many relationships with tamariki and their whānau, where together we are committed to an array of learning opportunities.

I am passionate about leading a team of professional leaders who value each tamaiti as an individual. I love having a kindergarten where fun and laughter are part of our everyday learning. I am passionate about tamariki learning at their pace where they know they are valued and have a safe sense of belonging.
