We are a kindergarten in a small coastal town with our tamariki coming from both the town and surrounding rural areas. Our tamariki attend a range of days from 1 to 5 days. Many of our tamariki have a strong sense of belonging to Aparima/ Riverton with many of our whānau generational to the area. Relationships/whakawhanaungatanga is the heart of all learning and we strive for these to be the cornerstone of all learning here at Riverton.

We encourage children to be active, confident explorers, solve problems and make decisions. Our smaller group size of just 20 children ensures all children have space and time for exploration. Community involvement is important to us; we encourage our community to be involved with the kindergarten and we involve our children with the wider community. We use local resources such as the museum and seashore within our programme. Wherever possible we incorporate what is happening in the community with our learning.

Our environment is light and bright with a great outdoor space to encourage exploration. We like to take part in physical challenges and the tamariki feel a proud sense of achievement when they achieve their goals! We encourage tamariki to be respectful, inclusive and welcoming to all. We all support and celebrate learning and achievements together here. Learning happens in a natural fluid way, unhurried wherever possible with tamariki setting the direction and drive.

We have a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te reo Māori. We strive to ensure our curriculum is accessible to all in an equitable way. We encourage tamariki to embrace our diversity with each person’s learning celebrated.

We warmly invite visitors to come and see us in action at any time, join in the fun and see what kindergarten all is about. Just come on down anytime during our hours of operation.

Head Teacher

Kathy Hollings

Hi, I’m Kathy and I have been teaching for many years! I have worked in both childcare and kindergarten during this time. I absolutely love teaching here at Riverton, the magic happens here with our small group size, great teaching team, and supportive whānau. It truly feels that the village takes responsibility for the raising of the child here.
