Our kindergarten is based in Lumsden, a small rural town in the beautiful area of Northern Southland. We are part of a close-knit community. We strive to build and extend links between our kindergarten whānau, the local schools, and community/charitable groups

Our key focus is to provide a warm, family atmosphere that nurtures the development of each individual tamaiti at their own pace. We achieve this through growing trusting relationships with our tamariki, their whānau and our local community. Our learning experiences are underpinned by the values of Te Ao Maori and building a strong appreciation of the local area and natural environment (as part of our Enviroschools programme).

The indoor area features cosy and quiet spaces where tamariki can focus on creative and educational pursuits, while our outdoor area allows tamariki to explore active and messy play opportunities. Our garden area has flower, vege and herb plants, a composting area and a worm farm.

We actively teach, support and encourage the skills of self-care and self-awareness, to empower our tamariki to be confident and independent in their own abilities. Supporting respect and recognition of their own and others’ thoughts and feelings, along with growing positive communication skills and tools for social interaction. While the kindergarten kaiako are always on hand to provide support, we also nurture tuakana-teina learning where tamariki use their own knowledge and skills to support others.

We are always excited to welcome all nationalities and cultures! Learning about our families’ values is important to us and helps us tailor our teaching approaches to specific cultural requirements and traditions. It is a great opportunity for all to learn about, value and embrace the languages and cultures of all our kindergarten whānau!

Head Teacher

Lisa Sadler

I have lived and worked in Te Anau for over 20 years and enjoyed the amazing community and natural environment of this region.

The demands of being a single parent led me to review my career and make the change to early childhood in 2013 when I commenced work and study to obtain a degree in education (Early Childhood).

My personal interest in sustainability issues, the environment, outdoor pursuits, tramping and gardening, and the benefits of being out in nature continue to be a major influence on my teaching practice.

I previously worked at Southern Stars Early Learning Centre in Te Anau where I was Head Teacher from 2019-2023.

I am enjoying getting to know the Lumsden community and working alongside other kaiako, tamariki and the parent community / whānau to develop and implement a high-quality education program for our kindergarten.
